
GUSTO:
GROUND UP SCHOOL TRANSFORMATION

Initiated in 2015, GUSTO was a collaborative effort between the Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri (JPN) of Perak and Pulau Pinang, Yayasan AMIR, LeapEd Services, and Teach For Malaysia (TFM). The programme was designed to address the unique challenges faced by underperforming schools, particularly those serving students from lower socio-economic backgrounds. GUSTO was piloted in 5 secondary schools in Pulau Pinang and Perak:

Teachers were positioned as change agents, receiving support to enhance their instructional practices and leadership capabilities.

Development of Middle Leaders within schools to drive pedagogical improvements and foster a culture of excellence.

Delivery of high-quality, continuous professional development programmes tailored to the specific needs of each school.

Promotion of collective teacher efficacy through shared goals, peer observations, and collaborative problem-solving.

Implementation of data-driven strategies to inform teaching practices and monitor student progress.
By focusing on grassroots-level transformation, GUSTO aimed to create sustainable improvements in teaching and learning, ultimately enhancing student outcomes and school performance.
